According to NBC Washington, this is one of the ridiculous ways Common Core teaches kids problem solving and critical thinking… with simple beyond reason math problems.
I found this image on Facebook and shared it and even asked my stepfather to take a look at it. An aerospace engineer (a career involving a heavy amount of calculus) could not figure out what was going on here. If you’re making math so hard that someone who studied his ass off in calculus classes can’t understand it, you’re making it too hard for kids. Burn Common Core to the fucking ground.
I can’t even begin to understand why this new fangled way is necessary. Like…I’m so confused right now looking at this shit. Bish whet?
Fuck the American public education system. This shit is why out children don’t tank top 10 globally. This is why our children can’t get jobs.
Why should you do this confusing bullshit when the ‘old’ way is easier and FASTER?
This can’t even be real what the actual fuck is this shit?
what the hell
I remember they tried to make us use this method when I was in the third grade.
Like, I can see how it works, but it’s so unnecessarily complicated that, even as a maths prodegy at the time, I only barely understood it. Thankfully, it wasn’t forced on us and we were free to use the “old method” if we understood it better, and there actually were people who prefered the difference by addition method, but it all fell apart on larger opperations, and when we finally got to order of opperations, nobody used it any more, just to reduce the number of steps for the already (relatively) long procedure.
Long story short: It’s a legitimate method, but a lengthy and overly complicated one that should not be forced over other tried and true methods, especially if the student already understands the easier, more effective one.
(btw, for those who don’t get it, the method involves adding to the second number until you get the first number. The ammount you added is the first number minus the second. It’s still pointless bullshit, but at least now you know what they’re trying and failing at)
Why are we torturing children? What did they do to us?
I don’t get it.
This might be why I was an English major
I don’t understand why you would do this? The “old way” works fine. I could see if this would be helpful/less work but this would make me cry
I can’t even figure out how that shit works.
